Emission treatment - air pollution control - odour control
Several techniques are available to control industrial air pollution : gas scrubbing (physical, chemical), biofiltration,
bioscrubbing, biotricklingfiltration, activated carbon filtration and combustion
(thermal – catalytic). Each method has its own field of application, pros and cons and corresponding cost, all depending on the circumstances.
In this perspective, Task is mainly offering solutions for emission treatment
of gasses containing H2S, NH3, HCl, SO2,merkaptans,
amines, phenol, CH2O,
etc.
Washing or scrubbing gas emissions by means of
gas scrubbers
For scrubbing industrial emissions water is used, with or without additional chemicals. This is a relatively simple and well controllable process. Gas scrubbing can be used used for smaller as well as for larger
emission flows containing pollutants well soluble in water, such as HCl, NH3,
alcohols…. In this context, we are talking about oxidative scrubbing, wherein
the polluting components (including mercaptans) are oxidised with sodium
hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide. Bigger gas scrubbers can remain operational
at acceptable energy levels. Gas scrubbers can be build in a relatively compact
and space saving way. A single counterflow scrubber can already be sufficient
for simple emission treatment. At larger emission flows (> 80.000-100.000
m³/hour) a crossflowscrubber is recommended. More complex emission flows are
preferrably treated in a multistage cross- and/or counterflowscrubber,
which can still be constructed in a logic, compact and relatively economic way.
Gas scrubbers are most often made of synthetic material due to the aggressivity
of the pollutants and the chemicals used. Stainless steel scrubbers will also be
used, but less frequently.
All processes can perfectly be monitored (for parameters such as pH, rH, conductivity,
gasdetection, flow,….) and accurately controled.
Predictable and guaranteed performance
In certainly 40-60 % of the cases, gas
scrubbers will offer a solution to emission treatment and/or
odour control problems. The scrubbers are always “custom
made” and adapted to the local situation and circumstances.
Besides, the pollution circumstances offered are in the
majority of the cases unsolvable with standardized and commun equipment. A test with a pilot plant is certainly not redundant in such circumstances; the information thus obtained is quite simple to be inter- or extrapolated in order to obtain a reliable operational system.
